He was a Master draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter.Matisse is regarded, with Pablo Picasso, as the greatest artist of the 20th century. 2011-10-21 Like Spanish Still Life, also in the Hermitage, this work was painted in Spain, which the artist visited in October 1910.

He is also highly regarded as a sculptor. Accomplishments Matisse began painting still lifes and landscapes in the traditional style and then ultimately through his own experimentation. He spent a great deal of time at the Louvre copying works of art.
